Thacher lists its 2026-27 tuition as $84,000 for boarding students and $68,050 for day students. The school says it does not charge fees beyond tuition. Here is how the cost and the aid process fit together for fall 2027 entry.
What tuition does not cover
Families should expect about $1,500 in additional costs for camping and riding gear, books and other academic supplies. For families receiving significant aid, typically 90% of tuition or more, the Olympus Fund helps with books, travel, gear and health insurance, and provides a monthly student allowance.
Payment plans
Thacher lists three options: ten monthly installments from July 1 to April 1, two installments (two-thirds by August 1 and the balance by December 15), or one payment on August 1.
How financial aid works
- How to apply. Families apply through the Clarity Application. A $65 submission fee is due at the end, and Clarity automatically determines fee waiver eligibility from income and assets.
- Deadline. New applicants submit by February 15, 2027. Admission decisions arrive March 10, 2027.
- How need is measured. Thacher uses the Clarity methodology, which looks at the income, assets and expenses of students and parents, divided among all children attending tuition-charging schools.
- Separated parents. The Financial Aid Committee considers the resources of both parents and any stepparents.
- Renewal. Awards are made annually, and families reapply each year. Families who enroll paying full tuition are expected to continue unless their finances change significantly.
Does need affect admission?
Thacher says it is not need blind. It also says it aims to accept students on their own qualifications without regard to their family's financial resources, and it encourages families not to rule out applying because of cost.
International families
International students are welcome to apply for need-based aid. Aid is need-based only, with no merit scholarships, and it does not cover living expenses. The $65 fee has no automatic waivers for international families.
What Thacher reports about aid
For 2025-26 the school lists that 28% of students received aid, with an average award of $64,659. These are the school's own figures for a past year. Your family's award depends on your own application.
What the aid application includes
The aid application includes federal income tax returns and supplemental documents. Some prior-year tax documents are collected automatically from the IRS. Applicants who do not file U.S. taxes upload the appropriate documents to Clarity instead. Thacher runs the aid application alongside admission but on a different deadline, so submitting the admission application does not start the aid application. Do both.
What the tuition covers
Thacher is a boarding school, and tuition is a single annual figure with no separate fees. Students take required arts and athletics, and every student is in an afternoon activity. The school lists 62 camping trips and 28 sports teams, and ninth graders are paired with a horse in the first week of school and ride for the entire year. The extra gear costs are the ones to plan for, which is why the school suggests budgeting about $1,500 beyond tuition.
Day students
Thacher is mostly a boarding school, with a small number of day students. The day tuition is $68,050 for 2026-27. The school recommends that day students live within 20 miles of campus, so check the distance before you compare the two figures.
What the school has not published
The pages we reviewed do not list which tax years to upload, the date aid awards are sent, or deposit and refund terms. Ask the admission office at admission@thacher.org or +1 (805) 640-3210 before you rely on any of those. Write down the answer and the date you received it, so the whole family is working from the same information when the March decision arrives.
When a family's situation is not typical
Thacher says its Financial Aid Committee considers the resources of both parents and any stepparents. A non-custodial parent who is not involved may need to file a waiver petition, so families in that position should raise it with the aid office early rather than at the deadline. Families who enroll paying full tuition are expected to continue doing so unless their finances change significantly.
A budgeting checklist
1. Decide whether you are applying as a boarding or day student, since the figures differ. 2. Add the $1,500 estimate for gear and supplies to the tuition figure. 3. Choose one of the three payment plans and note its dates. 4. If you will apply for aid, gather tax documents before the February 15 deadline. 5. Recheck every figure on the school's admissions site before you decide, because tuition changes each year.
Plan your own numbers
Gather tax documents early, and follow the Clarity instructions for the tax years to upload. See the full tuition and aid page, the timeline and the FAQ.
