School Fit

Decide whether Thacher fits your student

Thacher asks every new student to ride, camp and live in a dorm. Look past selectivity to that daily life.

School fit

Is Thacher a fit?

The school
Thacher is a college preparatory boarding school for grades 9 to 12 on a 540-acre campus in Ojai, California.
Culture
The school calls its Honor Code a way of life that guides personal conduct and academic integrity in a tight-knit community.
By the numbers
The school lists 540 acres, 48 faculty members (97% of whom live on campus and advise, coach or lead camping trips), roughly 120 horses, and students from 21 states and 13 countries.
Advisors
Each student has a faculty advisor, and every year brings a new advisor. Advisors usually work with five or six students and send written updates home twice a year.
Arts and athletics
Students take required arts and athletics that ask them to take a chance on things they have not already mastered.
Programs
The school lists 62 camping trips, 28 sports teams and 100% participation in afternoon activities, with French, Mandarin and Spanish offered.
  1. 01

Ask your student whether they want to ride, camp and try things they have not mastered, and let them answer honestly.

  2. 02

Visit or take the virtual tour, and ask what a typical week looks like.

Boarding life

What dorm, horse and outdoor life ask of a student.

Boarding or day
College preparatory boarding school with a small number of day students
Dorms
Dorms are by grade and gender: Casa de Piedra (9th-grade girls), Lower School (9th-grade boys), Middle School (sophomore girls), Los Padres (sophomore boys), The Hill (junior and senior girls) and Upper School (junior and senior boys). Sespe houses ten juniors and seniors of all gender identities as well as allies.
Dorm life
Dorm heads and other dorm faculty live close by and take an active part in dorm life. Senior prefects serve as leaders and informal advisors and check in with their prefectees every night.
Ninth-grade program
New ninth graders spend five days camping and backpacking on Santa Cruz Island early in the year and take a weekly Foundations class on study skills, the Honor Code, healthy relationships and consent.
Horse program
Ninth graders are paired with a horse the first week of school and are required to ride for the entire school year. New sophomores and juniors choose one athletic season to join the Horse Program.
Horse packing trip
Every student takes a weekend horse packing trip during their first year.
Wilderness school
Ninth graders typically go to the Golden Trout Wilderness School, a Thacher base camp for more than 50 years, the day after arriving on campus.
Changing grades
A student repeating a grade at a California high school is likely to be ineligible for California Interscholastic Federation competition during senior year and should tell the admission officer.
  1. 01

Talk through the routines your student manages without reminders, such as sleep, study and laundry.

  2. 02

Decide how you will handle distance, weekends and check-ins, then ask the school how it handles them.

  3. 03

If your student has never ridden or camped, ask the admission office how new students are taught.
